Mitch McConnell needs to be held responsible.

Last night, led by McConnell, every single Republican voted against a stop-gap funding bill to keep the government running and against allowing the federal government to keep borrowing money to pay its bills. Never before—never!—has our country defaulted on our fiscal obligations. And we can't begin now.

Voting for a default is a complete abdication of duty. If Congress does not agree to lift the debt limit and continue funding the government, the U.S. economy will be destabilized and the ramifications will be far-reaching.

By mid-October, millions of Social Security recipients, veterans and active-duty military members could stop receiving payments needed for basic survival.

Disaster relief for hurricanes and wildfires will be cut off. Businesses will see interest rates rise and the U.S. economy is expected to lose 6 million jobs.¹

Let’s keep the pressure on Senate Republicans to do the right thing and join their Democratic colleagues in voting to raise the debt limit and keep the government running. Let’s also make clear to Democrats that if Republicans refuse to do the right thing, then Democrats must do everything in their power to keep our families and our economy stable and safe.

The consequences of refusing to raise or suspend the debt limit will be extremely harmful to millions of Americans.

By refusing to allow borrowing to cover expenses that Congress has already approved, Mitch McConnell and his band of followers in the Senate are recklessly threatening people and businesses that the government owes money to.
