Dear friend,
Unsafe abortions account for eight to ten percent of maternal deaths in India.
A new fact-finding report released by the Center for Reproductive Rights and our partners, National Law School of India University Banglore and National Law University of Delhi, emphasizes that widespread legal barriers to safe abortion access in India have led to at least 800,000 unsafe abortions per year.
At the Center, we believe that access to safe abortion care is grounded in human rights principles. Countries around the world are responsible for ensuring available, accessible, acceptable, and quality abortion services for all without discrimination.
Equal access to abortion care—everywhere—is essential for social and economic equality, reproductive autonomy, and the right to determine our own lives. Today, as we honor International Safe Abortion Day, we hope you'll join us in recommitting to securing safe, legal abortion services for all.
You can learn more about the report, titled Legal Barriers to Accessing Safe Abortion Services in India: A Fact-Finding Study, here.
Thank you for all that you do.
Sincerely,
Prabina Bajracharya
