Last Friday, Suzan DelBene voted along with 218 House Democrats to protect the right to an abortion by passing the Women's Health Protection Act -- a significant victory in the fight for women's health care and reproductive rights.
After the draconian Texas abortion ban took effect due to inaction from the Supreme Court, Suzan and other like-minded Democrats spoke out. Then, they took swift action to stop this assault on women's health by moving this critical legislation.
But now, it faces stiff odds in the Senate, where the filibuster -- as it's done too often in recent years -- threatens to prevent this landmark bill from becoming law.
The decision to terminate a pregnancy is between a pregnant person and their doctor, not government officials, strangers, or right-wing lawmakers. That's why the WHPA is so essential -- it prevents harsh and punitive abortion bans, like the Texas bill, from being implemented by states across the country.
WHPA also prohibits restrictions on abortion "when, in the good-faith medical judgment of the treating health care provider, continuation of the pregnancy would pose a risk to the pregnant patient's life or health." This is about saving lives, John.
