My friend and former Secretary of Education John King is running for governor in Maryland, and I’m reaching out today to ask if you will consider splitting a donation between his campaign and my re-election.

It may surprise you, but despite being known as a blue state, Maryland has a two-term Republican governor right now. Like we’ve seen here in Connecticut, gubernatorial races are often a toss up. We know how much damage Trump Republicans can do if they get control of statehouses, so we can’t take anything for granted.

Flipping this governorship red to blue would make a real difference, but it’s going to require a lot of grassroots support.

Will you split a $3 donation between John King’s campaign for governor and my campaign’s organizing work? We need to make important investments in organizing now to make sure our states are blue in 2022.

John is exactly the kind of person we need in elected office, and he brings an incredibly important perspective to the decision-making table.

Long before he was a public school teacher or Education Secretary in the Obama Administration, John was a kid who faced incredibly difficult struggles. As a young man, he lost both of his parents, acted out in anger, and got kicked out of school. But he found teachers in his community who believed in him and refused to give up on him.

John says they transformed and saved his life. His story is one that is only possible in America — the kind of story we aspire to tell ourselves about what our country can be.

John's story represents the promise of progress, as he's running to lead a state where his great-grandfather was formerly enslaved and to make history as the nation's first Afro-Latino governor.
