Dear CV Friend,
I’ve been meaning to write to you about this...
It was one of the most fearless and clarifying speeches on religion and politics by a government
official in recent memory.
And people are still talking about it.
Earlier this month, Attorney General William Barr visited the
University of Notre Dame and delivered a devastating critique of the so-called “progressive” agenda.
“We have seen the
steady erosion of our traditional Judeo-Christian moral system and a comprehensive effort to drive it from the public square,” Barr
said.
And what has this erosion done to our society?
Barr didn’t hold back: “By any honest assessment, the consequences of this moral
upheaval have been grim. Virtually every measure of social pathology continues to gain ground.”
The attorney general then cited increases in
illegitimacy, mental illness, drug overdoses, suicide rates, and an increase in senseless violence.
Progress anyone?
“And yet the forces
of secularism, ignoring these tragic results, press on with even greater militancy.”
Barr made clear that we can no longer simply wait
for the pendulum to swing back. That’s because, as he explained, secularists have “marshaled all the forces of mass communications,
popular culture, the entertainment industry, and academia in an unremitting assault on religion and traditional values.”
And those who push back
against this relativism face social ridicule and the loss of their livelihoods.
But one of the biggest problems today, Barr noted, is that so-called
“progressives” have used the state “as the alleviator of bad consequences,” which prevents our society from snapping back to
sanity.
“So the reaction to growing illegitimacy is not sexual responsibility, but abortion.
"The reaction
to drug addiction is safe injection sites.
"The solution to the breakdown of the family is for the State to set itself up as the ersatz husband for
single mothers and the ersatz father to their children.
"The call comes for more and more social programs to deal with the wreckage. While we think
we are solving problems, we are underwriting them.
"We start with an untrammeled freedom and we end up as dependents of a coercive state on which
we depend.”
Thank
you, Attorney General Barr!
Isn't it great to have a stalwart, pro-life Catholic as our attorney general?
BOOKMARK THIS: His entire speech is
exceptional, and I would recommend you spend 30-40 minutes to watch it
on YouTube.
Thankfully, the attorney general is not simply detailing the decline.
In fact, he is marshalling the legal resources of the
Justice Department to vigorously defend our constitutionally-protected right to religious freedom in federal courts across the country.
On this note,
Barr made it clear: “As long as I am attorney general, the Department of Justice will be at the forefront of this effort, ready to fight for the
most cherished of our liberties: the freedom to live according to our faith.”
No wonder the media is going crazy over this speech!
But for all this praise of Bill Barr, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the one regret I had when he took the helm of the Justice
Department in February 2019.
I wish he had been there two years earlier.
Brian
P.S. This is why elections matter. This is why we fight. And this is why we must win again in 2020.
