Friend,

The inhumane treatment of Haitian asylum seekers at our southern border is horrifying. Seeking asylum is a fundamental human and legal right. Yet thousands of Haitians who survived devastating natural disasters and political violence are being dehumanized, denied due process, and forcibly returned to Haiti.

The Biden administration must immediately stop all deportations to Haiti and end all policies that deprive people of their right to seek humanitarian protection. The forced expulsions of Haitians is not only illegal and immoral — it is part of a decades-long history of anti-Black immigration policies that impact Haitian migrants. The Biden administration must chart a different course to welcome those seeking safety with dignity.

President Biden was elected by a multigenerational, multiracial coalition on a campaign promise to undo harm caused by the last administration, which decimated the systems set up to protect people seeking safety. Instead of striving to keep that promise, the Biden administration has doubled down on a failed and inhumane strategy of deterrence and is defending some of the Trump policies it pledged to end.

Join us in calling on President Biden to end all policies that slam the door on people needing refuge and to immediately stop deportations to Haiti.

Sincerely,

Marielena Hincapié
Executive Director, National Immigration Law Center
