Dear Friend --
FirstEnergy admitted to bribing House Speaker Larry
Householder to pass HB 6, which gave a windfall of your cash to
subsidize old coal and nuclear plants. Since then, ratepayers (you)
paid $51 million in the first half of 2021 and $155 million in 2020 to
Ohio's big utility companies.
The coal plant subsidies that were
quietly inserted into HB 6 to keep other Ohio electric utilities from
fighting HB 6’s nuclear bailout remain a part of your monthly electric
bill.
SB 117/HB 351 would repeal those
subsidies
The Eisenhower-era Ohio Valley Electric Coal plants (OVEC)
––Kyger Creek in Ohio, and Clifty Creek in Indiana––have both
been losing money for years, and it's coming out of our
pockets. Ohio ratepayers have been forced to pay $166 million and counting to bail out the
OVEC coal plants.
Every month we pay for these polluting, inefficient plants with our
pocketbooks and our health.
You can watch a running ticker of the subsidies you paid for and
the pollution released from the OVEC coal plants via the Office of the
Ohio Consumers' Counsel website:
We want
House Bill 6 – all of it – gone.
Urge your legislators to support SB 117/HB 351. This bipartisan effort will not
only repeal the Ohio Valley Electric Corporation (OVEC)
taxpayer-paid subsidies included in HB 6, but also refund Ohio
ratepayers like you.
Thanks for taking action!

P.S. You might have missed the news on Friday that Dan McCarthy, Governor DeWine’s legislative
director resigned. When he was still a lobbyist for
FirstEnergy, McCarthy started a dark money group - Partners For
Progress - that formed a link in the money chain between FirstEnergy,
Generation Now and the effort to pass HB6.
