Welcome to, Monday, September 27th, ciders and juices...

Significant votes are expected in both chambers this week as lawmakers try to avert a government shutdown on Friday.

The Senate will take a procedural vote today to advance a bill that would avoid a government shutdown by providing funding for disaster relief and Afghan evacuee resettlement as well as suspending the debt limit until mid-December 2022.

Republicans oppose the inclusion of the debt limit suspension in the bill but have signaled a willingness to support a stopgap continuing resolution that includes funding for disaster relief and Afghan resettlement.

Bipartisan Lawmakers Preserve Defense Funding Boost

The House has advanced the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2022 after bipartisan lawmakers increased the defense spending authorization level above the White House’s request and held off attempts by progressive Democrats to reverse the funding boost.

When the bill was considered in the House Armed Services Committee, Ranking Member Mike Rogers (R-IL) introduced an amendment to boost the level of authorized defense spending in FY2022 by $23.9 billion above the $744 billion proposed by President Joe Biden.

Rogers’s amendment allowed for an increased operational budget ($3 billion); the procurement of additional ships ($4.7 billion), aircraft ($1.7 billion), and vehicles ($878 million); along with other items such as research and development ($5.2 billion).

Do you support or oppose the bipartisan defense spending authorization?
