Governors sometimes play a critical role in the redistricting process -- like serving on redistricting commissions or having the power to veto unfair maps drawn by the state legislatures. Unfortunately, Governors in AOTL target states like Texas, Ohio, Georgia, and Florida have a history of showing disdain for our democracy and voting rights.

Take a look at the track records of these four governors:

Texas Governor Greg Abbott
Texas Democrats were forced to break legislative quorum twice this year fight an anti-voting bill. In response, Abbott threatened to arrest lawmakers to get his quorum. After this bill was signed into law by Abbott, multiple news sources described it "draconian" in the lengths it goes to suppress voting. 

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine
Despite having the authority to convene the state’s redistricting commission, Gov. DeWine ignored calls from fair map advocates on the ground and waited months before commencing the map-drawing process. After fumbling the process multiple times and not upholding the reforms that Ohio voters passed in 2015 and 2018, even he called the constitutionality of the legislative maps (that he voted to support!) into question. 

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp
This year, Governor Kemp signed a controversial voter suppression law behind closed doors -- mere hours after the state legislature passed it. And when one Black lawmaker simply knocked on his office door to witness the signing, she was arrested. That all amounts to multiple red flags against Kemp for dodging transparecy. 

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis
Earlier this year, DeSantis prohibited some press from covering a signing ceremony for a new voter suppression bill. The press allowed in the room? Unsurprisingly, Fox News was the only news outlet with an “exclusive” pass to the event.

AOTL will be paying close attention to the map-drawing process -- from state legislators drawing the lines to governors deciding to sign or veto manipulated maps. And we'll be calling out key players like these governors when they're working to consolidate power instead of represent the best interests of their constituents.
