House Democrats Pass Extreme Abortion Bill
From the National Review editorial board: House Democrats united behind legislation they could almost all agree upon: enshrining in federal law a virtually unlimited right to kill a baby through all nine months of pregnancy. If all members had voted, it would have taken only four Democratic dissenters to kill this radical abortion bill, but just one voted against it. H.R. 3755, the deceitfully named Women’s Health Protection Act, would invalidate nearly all state laws limiting and regulating abortion, including many health and safety regulations designed to protect the lives of women ( National Review). From Lila Rose: In a 218-211 vote, the Democrat-controlled House just passed the most extreme abortion law in American history. It would codify the “right” to kill preborn children through all 9 months in all 50 states ( Twitter). From Dr. Albert Mohler: … this bill is not going to get through the United States Senate. It’s just not… Even if the House Democrats do force this through on what will be a party line vote, it can’t get through the Senate on the same basis. And that is because the filibuster rule in the Senate means that in order for the bill to reach the floor, it must have 60 votes. And when it comes to this legislation, when it comes to this bill that would legislate Roe v. Wade, there is no chance that this bill is going to get 60 votes and that would require 10 Republican votes. It’s not going to happen. Even a basically pro-abortion Republican, like Senator Susan Collins of Maine says that she cannot support this legislation in its present form. Therefore, since the House is taking this up against the background of legislative impossibility, that tells you that they’re doing it in order to exercise what you might call a congressional form of virtue signaling. They’re virtue signaling loudly and clearly and so is the administration, by the way. The administration of Democratic President Joe Biden released a statement on Monday, a statement of strong support of the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2021, as it is called ( Briefing).

Democrats Still Battling Over $3.5 Trillion Spending
From the story: The few remaining Democrats who at least claim to lean to the center are in a game of legislative chicken with the more numerous left wing of the party, with the would-be centrists wanting to pass a separate $1.2 trillion “infrastructure” bill before being asked to commit to a final social-spending package. The extreme left wing wants just the opposite, saying they will block the infrastructure bill until they have a commitment on social spending ( MSN). The Wall Street Journal editorial board explains why $3.5 trillion is just the starting point ( WSJ). The same editorial board notes Speaker Nancy Pelosi “ keeps moving on the spending bill she calls “transformative” to appease her left flank. The Budget Committee marked it up this weekend. She’s hoping this movement will be enough to pass the Senate infrastructure bill through the House this week. Her expectation is that passing that bill will be enough to buy off the swing-district Democrats to sign up for her entitlement project. These Democrats haven’t shown any backbone to date, so it’s a reasonable bet” ( WSJ).

NBC News Senior Political Reporter: Biden Needs to Spend Big to Get Democrats Back on Board
From Jonathan Allen: It’s not just that the honeymoon is over. The marriage between Biden and the public is on the rocks. Many Democrats believe his best chance to salvage it — maybe his last shot before the specter of midterm elections paralyzes Congress — is to enact as much as possible of his two-part, $4 trillion plan to bolster infrastructure and expand the nation’s social safety net.
