John,

Huwe Burton was just 16 years old when he was wrongfully arrested for the murder of his beloved mother. For decades, he fought to clear his name and get some measure of justice for his family. Huwe was finally exonerated on January 24, 2019, nearly three decades after the death of his mother.

When Innocence Project Staff Attorney Susan Friedman joined Huwe’s legal team in 2016, he had been released from prison on parole. They were able to meet in person and build a special connection during the years leading up to his exoneration. They also bonded over their hometown of New York and later discovered their shared love of running.

Huwe began running in prison about a decade into his sentence, and ran the New York City Marathon in 2016. But his dream was to run it again after his exoneration, this time as a truly free person.

Huwe was finally exonerated this January thanks to Susan and his team of attorneys including Rutgers Law School and Northwestern’s Center on Wrongful Convictions. Soon after his exoneration he signed up to run the marathon, and even convinced Susan to join him. They’ll be running side-by-side in the 2019 TCS NYC Marathon on Sunday, November 3rd.

They won’t be alone — among the more than 52,000 other participants, Susan and Huwe will be with Team Innocence Project, supporters who are running the marathon and raising money for the Innocence Project. Susan's goal is to raise $3,500 in support of all our clients still fighting to prove their innocence.

Please make a gift to cheer Susan and Huwe on in their marathon run, and support the many innocent people on their long journey toward justice. ([link removed])
