Content warning: This email mentions suicide.
Friends,
We need to make health care more accessible for all. We can’t do that if we put access to mental health care resources and treatment on the back burner.
This is especially important in New Mexico. The heartbreaking truth of it is that we’ve seen high suicide rates in our state, including among young people. In recent years, 29 percent of deaths in young people between ages 15 and 24 were due to suicide. Devastatingly, we’ve also seen more young children die by suicide.
This Suicide Prevention Awareness Month is a reminder of how critical it is to provide support and mental health services to every student in New Mexico who needs them. That’s why I’m so grateful to have worked with my colleagues in the Senate and the House to welcome more than $5 million in federal funding to New Mexico to help address this issue.
This funding will help New Mexico increase awareness of mental health issues among students, train school personnel to detect and respond to mental health issues, and connect students to critical services. Students deserve the resources to get better, and to thrive. This funding for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Project AWARE will help make that a reality.
Thank you for all you do for your family, neighbors, and community. I promise I will always fight to make sure you and your family have the best resources and care possible.
—Martin
