Independent Women’s Forum is pleased to announce that Rep. Diana Harshbarber, who represents Tennesee’s 1st Congressional District, is the latest entry in our popular series of Champion Women profiles ([link removed]) .

Diana Harshbarger, a young 61, has a soft Tennessee accent and dark, shoulder-length hair. She was a pharmacist who had never run for public office when she received a call from her pastor’s wife (who is also Diana’s financial adviser).

“She called me and said, ‘Diana, you would be perfect for this,'” when it was announced that longtime incumbent Dr. Phil Roe would not run again. “That call was the catalyst for me. I love this country. I have a son and two grandsons, and this is the deal: I see what is happening to our country, and that we are losing our freedoms one by one.”

Harshbarger campaigned and won on a conservative agenda that included protecting religious liberty, reducing taxes, healthcare issues, and national security. “We should be getting rid of government programs that are not effective,” she says. “One thing I even tell my staff, ‘You better be able to evaluate these programs. If you can't measure it, it's not worth doing.’ And that's the only way you can measure success in a business, and it’s the only way you can measure success in anything you do. These people are just—well, it’s the most blatant waste of money and time that I've ever seen so far. I’ve only been here a short time, but that’s my take.”

We know you will enjoy meeting Rep. Diana Harshbarger, a warm and candid woman budget cutter who may be just the right prescription for our spendthrift Congress.
