Now, let's get back to the three ways that Trump's claim that he is being lynched are outrageous:
First, lynchings are lawless mob “justice.” Impeachment is a lawful process – and it is Trump who is actively interfering with this lawful process.
Second, lynchings are acts of white supremacist terror. Trump is not the victim of this kind of terror. By calling Mexicans “rapists,” by calling white supremacists in Charlottesville “fine people,” and by calling desperate migrants an “invasion,” Trump is a chief instigator of white supremacist terror and murder.
Third, by claiming that he is facing a lynching, Trump is falsely portraying himself as the “victim.” It is an integral part of fascism that the fascists – who are part of the dominant group – portray themselves as the “victims.” The Nazis, for example, learned that their supporters were more willing to stomach their atrocities when they claimed these atrocities had been necessary acts of self-defense. Similarly here, this false claim of victimhood on the part of Trump, enables his supporters to rationalize the atrocities and norm-breaking he carries out by the day.
