We’re in an urgent moment, John.
Congress is currently working on the Build Back Better Act. This 3.5 trillion dollar package could finally provide much needed funding for updated infrastructure, renewable energy technology, and clean jobs.1
But here’s my concern, John. Right now, we need to fight to include language in the Build Back Better Act to repeal fossil fuel industry subsidies. Our government currently gives away tens of billions of taxpayer dollars to the fossil fuel industry every year. That’s money we could use to upgrade our infrastructure and fight the climate crisis.
The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change announced that the climate emergency is “code red” for humanity. Despite this, the fossil fuel industry continues to destroy our planet at record speed, resulting in permanent droughts, massive wildfires, deadly hurricanes, and unlivable communities.
Our government can’t ignore this growing crisis anymore. They must take immediate action beginning with ending all subsidies for fossil fuel companies and investing in a clean energy economy that creates sustainable jobs and meets the scale of the climate crisis.
This is our chance to finally stop the government from using our tax dollars to prop up false solutions and a dying industry that has lied to the public for decades, continues to buy off our politicians in Congress, and actively destroys the health and safety of our communities.
We need to speak up now and demand that Congress ends fossil fuel subsidies in the Build Back Better Act.
Towards a fossil free future,
