** CfA's September 24, 2021 Newsletter
------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your continued support of CfA. We're dedicated to continue working to hold the powerful accountable.

**
This Week:
------------------------------------------------------------
* TTP Investigation: Facebook Still a Haven for Human Smuggling: On Thursday, CfA's Tech Transparency Project (TTP), released a report showing that Facebook, which insists it doesn’t allow human smugglers to use its platform, remains a vibrant marketplace for those illegally selling assistance with border crossings. This follows TTP reports in April ([link removed]) and June ([link removed]) that identified dozens of Facebook pages offering migrants passage across the U.S. southern border. (Press Release ([link removed]) , Report ([link removed]) )
+ This update identifies an additional 40 Facebook pages and 17 Facebook groups that openly sell illegal border crossings. It also found several Haitian Creole-language groups and pages encouraging Haitians to head to Mexico and the U.S.—a troubling trend given the crisis in Del Rio, Texas, where thousands of Haitian migrants have been encamped.

** What We're Reading:
------------------------------------------------------------
* Facebook exec will testify at Senate hearing after report finds Instagram harms teen mental health: "The hearing comes after The Wall Street Journal published a series of reports detailing internal discussions at Facebook, based on documents it obtained. One of the articles that sparked anger among lawmakers revealed that Facebook conducted research that showed its Instagram app had a negative impact on many teenage girls’ mental health, despite testimony from top executives in the past that only highlighted the platforms’ positive impacts. Lawmakers in both parties demanded answers from Facebook." (CNBC ([link removed]) , September 23)

* FEC Unanimously Rejects Trump Campaign Complaint Against Snapchat: "The Federal Election Commission has dismissed a complaint made by former President Donald Trump's campaign against Snapchat, which it said had violated election laws by removing the campaign's content from its curated "Discover" page. Snapchat announced in June 2020 that it would no longer promote Trump's content on the page, though it did not remove Trump's account from the platform, leading to a complaint from the campaign 4 months later." (Business Insider ([link removed]) , September 23)

* FTC Chair Lina Khan outlines new vision for antitrust enforcement, consumer protection: "Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan laid out her policy priorities and vision in a memo to staff dated Wednesday and recently made public. It’s an early outline of her goals for the agency, which is overseen by five commissioners who vote on enforcement actions and policy statements. The agency enforces antitrust law alongside the Department of Justice Antitrust Division and seeks to protect consumers from unfair business practices and privacy violations."
