Help Us Ensure Social Security Benefits Continue Uninterrupted!

Dear John,

Time is running out! We have just days before Congress must act to avoid a government default on our financial obligations and prevent any disruption in sending out Social Security benefit checks.

A government default would not only ruin the economy and cost the U.S. millions of jobs, but Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has also warned that if Congress fails to take action to avoid a default, “nearly 50 million seniors could stop receiving Social Security checks for a time.”

That’s why we need to make our views heard today! Please pick up your phone right now and call the National Committee’s toll-free Legislative Hotline at (800) 998-0180. The Hotline will connect you directly with your members of Congress. Tell your Senators and Representative to quickly pass legislation to raise or suspend the debt ceiling!

Given that nearly 40% of beneficiaries depend on their monthly checks for at least 90% of their income — and two-thirds of recipients depend on their earned benefits for at least half of their income — delaying benefits for several weeks or a month would have dire consequences for many beneficiaries who would have to decide: Do I pay my rent? Do I buy food? Do I buy my medicine?

Passing legislation that enables our government to pay for the spending that lawmakers from both political parties have voted for in the past is a ministerial function of Congress. It should be done quickly, cleanly and without putting the benefits of America’s retirees in jeopardy!

Social Security, which was created in 1935, has never missed a payment — and so I hope you’ll help us ensure it doesn’t start now!

As one of the National Committee’s million+ members and supporters, your voice matters! Please help the National Committee put pressure on members of Congress to step up to the plate and enact the legislation that is necessary to extend or suspend the debt limit by calling them through our legislative hotline at (800) 998-0180.

And please, with so much at stake, consider supporting the National Committee’s emergency efforts on Capitol Hill to ensure Social Security benefits continue uninterrupted by making one urgent donation today!

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
President & CEO
