Friend,
With the recent surge in COVID cases, Montana has become a national hot spot for COVID-related hospitalizations.
Last Friday, 1,209 new cases were announced. That number has only grown this week, and the spike in hospitalizations has slammed hospital systems across Montana. One of my public health colleagues put things in perspective to describe just how bad it's gotten:
1 in 566 Montanans have died from COVID. That roughly equates to 45 people in any sold-out Griz game.
I'm not sending you this email to stir up more anxiety on top of what we're all already feeling. But the fact is we need to acknowledge that Montanans are carrying a unique responsibility -- both to ourselves and our friends and neighbors -- to finally get out of this mess. WE are the solution.
Easing the heavy burden placed on our frontline health workers starts with encouraging friends and family to get vaccinated. Immediately. It also means delivering for rural populations who often lack access to critical supplies and vaccine support.
When COVID-19 first struck, I founded We Are Montana to do exactly this type of crisis response work for Montanans in need. This work continues today. And while I'm proud that we're doing our part, it's with mixed emotions because I’m disappointed we're still here.
Friend, when things get hard is precisely when we need to roll up our sleeves and get to work. We're seeing our health care workers do it every single day. Now it's our turn to step up and do our part.
Yours,
Cora
