This is the mother of all shady campaign fundraising practices...
Team,
Here it is — the mother of all shady campaign fundraising practices: Targeting seniors with deceptive marketing.
We’ve shared a lot of the dirty practices that happen FAR too often in political fundraising, but here’s the piece you really need to keep in mind: Deceptive online fundraising techniques (like fake matching donations, pre-checked boxes, and manufactured crises) are most likely to ensnare seniors.
The New York Times recently dropped a bombshell investigation on how it happens, with particular focus on a donor to President Trump Here’s more:
“Over four months last year, Mr. Vaughan had made 400 donations totaling nearly $11,500 — to Donald J. Trump, Mitch McConnell, Tim Scott, Steve Scalise and many others. The sum was far beyond the realm of his financial ability, his son said, and sure enough, he soon discovered handwritten notes outlining what appeared to be his father’s call disputing the charges with his credit card company.”
Look, we aren’t here to defend Trump donors. If we had it our way, no one would ever want to contribute to former President Trump. But DEMOCRATS have to be the ones leading on decency, transparency, and honesty in building this grassroots movement.
We shouldn’t try to out-compete Republicans on who can scare or deceive the most donors. We should build honest coalitions of willing participants who believe in the mission.
Our mission is clear: Defend our NewDem Members in the House and flip more seats from red to blue. If that’s a mission you can stand behind, then yes — we would love your support. [[link removed]]
