Friends -
Last month, the right-wing majority of the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the Biden administration’s extension of the federal eviction moratorium.
They said the Department of Health and Human Services didn’t have the authority to enforce it, and that instead, Congress had to pass a law explicitly authorizing them to do so.
That’s exactly what we’re going to do.
This week, I proudly joined Rep. Cori Bush, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and more than three dozen more of our Congressional colleagues in introducing the Keeping Renters Safe Act of 2021.
I’ll explain more in a moment, but if that’s all you need to hear to add your name in support, please, sign my petition today: We must reinstate the federal eviction moratorium immediately. This is important.
Let me be crystal clear: Housing is not a privilege, it’s a human right.
The coronavirus pandemic hasn’t ended, and neither should emergency housing protections. In a time of so much uncertainty and suffering, and with millions of Americans facing evictions in the coming months, Congress has a moral duty to keep the moratorium in place for the rest of the pandemic and for 60 days after it ends.
This bill would protect millions of working people at risk of losing their homes, and make sure families across the country have the stability and security they need to get through the coronavirus crisis without worrying about keeping a roof over their heads. Put simply, extending the moratorium will save lives, and we need to act fast.
We have a great deal of work ahead of us to make sure this legislation passes the House and Senate and gets to President Biden’s desk. That’s why it’s critical that our progressive movement all stand together on this issue — and it’s why I’m asking for your help today:
Thank you in advance for adding your voice to ours.
In solidarity,
