** Court Rules that Florida Cannot Deny the Right to Vote Based on Inability to Pay Fines and Fees ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
In a victory for CLC, our clients and our partner organizations, a U.S District Court ruled that lack of wealth cannot be a barrier to one’s ability to vote. The court has recognized that Florida can’t deny people the right to vote based on their ability to pay, and restores the right to vote to plaintiffs who are otherwise eligible to vote but are unable to pay off their outstanding fines, fees and restitution.

It’s now up to the state to determine a process for affected citizens to show that their legal debt is creating a barrier to the ballot. There are local elections throughout the state on November 5 and the presidential primary election takes place in Florida in March 2020.
