A Close Look at Freshwater: The Overflowing Risks of Biodiversity Loss
September 28, 2021, 11am ET
The state of our natural world has captured global investor attention thanks to research emphasizing the monetary value of ecosystem services and the alarming rates of species loss, especially within freshwater ecosystems. Biodiversity, an indicator of ecosystem health, has declined at unparalleled rates for decades because of human activity, with no sign of slowing down. Freshwater serves as a linchpin in many ecosystems—our rivers, lakes and streams teem with life when water quality and quantity are maintained, but this biodiversity can quickly degrade when too much, too little, or too dirty water flows through the ecosystem. Society as a whole relies on the quantity and quality of
freshwater, so a loss in biodiversity in both terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems will impact business operations and livelihoods. While biodiversity loss exacerbates a number of risks for investors, this webinar will focus on the overlap between biodiversity loss and water-related risks. |

Driving to Net Zero: How Massachusetts Can Decarbonize the Transportation Sector
September 30, 2021, 1pm ET
Massachusetts’ law requires that the Commonwealth reach net zero emissions no later than 2050. To meet this target, the state must adopt policies to decarbonize each sector of the economy. Massachusetts’ transportation sector emits more greenhouse gases than any other economic sector in the state. Accounting for nearly 40% of annual emissions, urgent action is needed to reduce transportation emissions in the Commonwealth. Furthermore, new research shows that exposure to transportation emissions co-pollutants, especially from medium and heavy duty fleet vehicles, increases the risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19. By electrifying vehicle fleets and adopting air quality
policies, the state can reduce emissions while improving public health in overburdened and underserved communities. |
Corporate Climate Lobbying and the Board: Navigating Investor Expectations
September 30, 2021, 2pm ET
It is increasingly apparent that impacts of climate change pose not just financial and material risks to companies and industries, but in fact systemic risk to financial markets writ large. Given the nature of this risk, all corporate action—including corporate lobbying—should be proportional to the risk faced and aligned with the latest science on climate change. Yet Ceres’ recent assessment of 96 large U.S.-based companies reveals that many companies are not actively managing the risk of misaligned climate lobbying. Investors indeed recognize that corporate lobbying that is misaligned with climate science poses an investment risk and have boosted engagements to
encourage boards and management to better manage this risk. The results of the 2021 proxy season underscore this, with shareholders winning majority votes on Paris Aligned climate lobbying proposals at five companies. |
Partnering with the C-Suite to Tackle ESG
October 4, 2021, 3pm ET
Corporate boards cannot oversee environmental and social risks unless they are equipped with the right information. Often, the conduit for that information is the C-Suite. This panel will explore how board members can effectively work with the C-Suite to address environmental and social risks; and how directors can ensure they are informed with enough information, and the right information, to exercise responsible risk oversight for climate and other environmental and social issues. Case studies will be included to illustrate key points. |
