Remembering Rep. Steve Davisson

Earlier this week, Representative Steve Davisson passed away after a heroic battle with cancer. Davisson, of Salem, represented District 73 since 2010. Tributes and reflections have poured in since Rep. Davisson passed. Below are a selection. We ask that you join the Indiana Republican Party in keeping the Davisson Family in your prayers as they mourn Steve.

“My good friend Steve Davisson was a good friend to anyone that met him, and for that, we’re all fortunate and mourn his loss. As a man of faith, family and community, he was a model citizen legislator, daily carrying out the duties that made him an obvious Sagamore of the Wabash. His ability to take on tough and complex issues with common sense and that famous smile was a gift from above. First Lady Janet Holcomb and I will keep his wife, children and many grandchildren in our prayers as they find peace for such an unimaginable loss for their family, loved ones and his constituents that were so honored to have him represent them over all these years in our Statehouse." -Governor Holcomb

"We already shared a connection to Salem by the time we were colleagues in the Indiana House of Representatives, because my uncle, Donald Crouch was a family dentist in Salem, and his patients would go to Rep. Davisson to fill their prescriptions. I will remember him for his positive attitude. No one would have ever known he was sick because of his upbeat spirit, which was his outlook throughout his life." -Lt. Gov. Crouch

"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Rep. Steve Davisson. A dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, Steve exeplified the meaning of servant leader. He will be deeply missed. Please join me in keeping the Davisson family in your prayers." -Chairman Hupfer

"Steve Davisson lived an extraordinary life of love, courage and service. While short in stature, Steve was a giant of a man in service to his family, community and state. He lived his life full of love and optimism, which made him such a blessing to know. Steve will be greatly missed by me and everyone who had the privilege to know him."
-Speaker Huston

Chairman's Note

With the onset of Fall comes the resumption of one of the more unique legislative sessions in Indiana history. This week, the General Assembly has reconvened to pass the new state house, senate, and Congressional district maps. Indiana’s legislative leaders should be applauded for the job they did in constructing new maps. They focused on population, not politics. The proposed new maps are compact, rejected gerrymandering, and kept intact communities of interest. Legislative leadership conducted a textbook process and the results are reflective of our state.

Of course, this hasn’t stopped the Democrat Party from accusing legislators of gerrymandering. Their baseless accusations were expected, but simply don’t reflect reality. In fact, it is rather interesting that the Democrats’ own proposed maps explicitly focus on a political outcome. By their own admission, they put politics above people when proposing their own districts. The simple fact is, because of your hard work and the policies of Republican leaders over the last two decades, voters continue to trust our party with leadership. Voters have elected Republican to every statewide office, both U.S. Senate seats, seven of nine U.S. House seats, supermajorities in both houses of the state legislature, 71 mayoral offices, and a whopping 88% of all county elected positions. State, county, city, and town offices are not legislatively draw and Republicans continue to dominate those offices. Our Republican electoral success is because Hoosiers see the results of common-sense conservative
leadership.

Our legislative leaders led a robust redistricting process that solicited and acted upon input from Hoosiers and produced a set of maps that reflect the state’s population and communities. The proposed districts are fair and put population over politics.

Thanks
Kyle
