John,

Behind many of our veterans, there stands another, less recognized hero.

Yvonne Riley is one of these heroes.

In 1997, Yvonne's husband, Dave, contracted an illness during his service in the Coast Guard. As a result, Yvonne had to consult with doctors on the decision to remove his arms and legs. She was instantly plunged into the deep end of caregiving for her critically ill husband -- from wound care and prescription management to personal hygiene and dressing.

More than two decades later, Yvonne remains Dave's primary caregiver, providing round-the-clock care and assistance for her quadruple-amputee husband.

Veteran caregivers make tremendous sacrifices. They put their own needs behind those of the veteran, giving up careers and ambitions of their own. And in addition to their tireless work as caregivers, they take on extra chores and tasks to keep their household running. All too often, this dedication and service to our country is simply overlooked.

"As a quadruple amputee, a lot of people ask about and thank me for my service. No one ever stops to thank my wife for the decades of service she's given this country in taking care of me. That's something we need to change." -- Dave Riley, Army and Coast Guard Veteran
