Dear Friend,
Tories Are Hammering Working Families
I hope you are all keeping well. Lately it really does seem like the UK is in crisis after crisis. And working families are bearing the brunt each and every time.
Whether Johnson's fairytale Brexit has meant a crippling shortage in lorry drivers, empty shelves and increased food prices. Whether the UK's energy crisis which the UK Government could have foreseen has meant spiralling energy prices and families choosing between heating and eating. A crisis in social security as working families face having £1000 a year slashed in the biggest cut to welfare benefits since 1945.
All against a backdrop of looming tax rises, increased living costs and increased job insecurity.
The Tories don't care about working families. The Labour Party is working hard to stand up against their callous decisions impacting hard-working people and to help change people's lives for the better.
If you require any assistance, please do not hesitate get in touch with me on [email protected].
With very best wishes,

Ann Cox Memorial
A lovely get together recently at Whitchurch Community Garden to remember our dear friend and Labour Party stalwart Ann Cox who is missed dearly. So many memories from so many whose lives were touched by Ann's kindness. The bench at the Garden has now been formally dedicated in her memory for the community to enjoy.

Silt Removal Work Underway
Julie Morgan MS and I have been working with flood-hit residents since Storm Dennis last year. We're really pleased our calls have been heeded to remove the silt build up under the railway bridge which could have contributed to the flooding.
|
|
|
Many of you have been in touch with queries as you've started to see preparation works begin. Here's TfW's plan:
13th September - site set up, de-vegetation to gain access to the work site, and construction of path down to work site.
20th September: Install environmental measures around the work site to protect the river, commence removal of shoal.
The intention is to remove the shoal material downstream of the bridge on span 4. The channel under span 4 needs to be tapered back into the main channel while not undermining the block armour placed on the bank between spans 4 and 5. There is also a need to ensure that the flow of water in the channel does not increase the risk of scour to the railway assets and adjacent land.
TfW are permitted to remove silt from directly underneath the viaduct and slightly beyond this only due to land ownership. TfW will continue to work with NRW to ensure that the current works are in line with the Flood Risk Activity Permit, and to evaluate the findings from the River Tall Modelling to inform next steps.

Forest Farm Vandalism
Last week, I visited Forest Farm Country Park, joined by Julie Morgan MS, Whitchurch Councillors and South Wales Police. Forest Farm has been subjected to shameful anti-social behaviour and crime over many months, most recently leading to one of their buildings burning down.
|
|
|
I was interested to see that South Wales Police are rolling out the use of What Three Words to better locate incidents of crime and that during our visit, many areas of the Country Park were now allocated words.
I am also pleased to support a bid which would see Forest Farm receive a £5m investment, earmarked by Cardiff Council, where additional security measures could be purchased and installed. I will keep working to help deliver this and to help keep our communities safe.

Great Big Green Week
in Cardiff North
It was great to see communities in Cardiff North getting involved with the Great Big Green Week, calling for urgent climate action and for UK Government to be bold with its climate ambition in the run up to COP26 which is just weeks away. Thank you to Eileen and everyone involved in bringing such a fantastic event to the community in Rhiwbina.

Your Say on Electric Vehicle
Charging Points
Julie and I want to better understand how the local community feels about electric vehicles and where you think the best places are for new charging points across Cardiff North. Having just bought my new electric car, I know that the prospect of moving to fully electric knowing the infrastructure needs improvement, is daunting.

|
|
Please fill out the survey above and let us know your thoughts. The data will be collated and presented to Cardiff Council as part of their continuing work to assess the expansion of the public electric vehicle charging network across the city.

20mph Speed Limit Proposals
Cardiff Council's proposals to reduce speed limits to 20mph on residential streets is welcome news to help make our communities safer, reduce road collisions and increase opportunities to walk and cycle. The proposals are being trialled in 8 communities across Wales which includes Heath and Whitchurch, Llandaff North and Tongwynlais.

Reclaim Bute Park
At the weekend, Cadi and I joined hundreds in coming together in solidarity against the needless vandalism of Bute Park which saw memorial trees sawn, plants ripped out and fires set. Such a fantastic event filled with positivity in response to such shameful behaviour. Thank you to Secret Garden Cafe for organising.

Justice Secretary Left Babbling at PMQs
|
|
This week at PMQs, I called on the new Justice Secretary to deliver the long-awaited Victims' Bill. Amidst the babbling, he asked if I could just give him a chance. 6 years of broken promises, 6 Justice Secretaries and 3 manifesto commitments and we're still yet to see a Bill. I think victims have waited long enough.

Zero Carbon Tour Comes to Cardiff
|
|
The Zero Carbon Tour came to Cardiff last week, sharing the net zero message with the business community ahead of COP26. It was a pleasure to join local businesses and see them playing their part to tackle the climate crisis. We must see greater and bolder climate leadership from UK Government if we are to rise to the scale of the challenge we face.

Soaring gas prices have plummeted the UK into an energy crisis and its vulnerable families who’ll bear the brunt. I called for the Chancellor’s budget to urgently deliver an efficient, green energy sector that protects the UK from shocks like this.

Tories Hammering Working Families
|
|
Last week I voted to cancel the Tories' cut to Universal Credit. We're seeing inflation rise 3.2%, supermarket prices rise, tax rises and now an energy crisis in the UK forcing families to choose between heating and eating.
And on top of that this Conservative Government wants to cut £1000 a year for over 5000 families in Cardiff North. They don't care about hard working families and I will continue to work with my Labour colleagues to stand against Tory policies hammering them.

Leaseholders Deserve Better
|
|
Last week I stood in solidarity with leaseholders in Cardiff North and across the UK at the Leaseholders Together rally. This scandal has taken a huge toll on leaseholders who shouldn’t have to foot the bill for dangerous cladding. Thanks to End Our Cladding Scandal for continuing to fight for justice.
