Haitian asylum seekers have faced hardship after hardship
John,
The scenes coming from our Southern border are brutal. Cruel images of Haitian immigrants being chased down and whipped by CBP agents have gone viral, as asylum seekers are being deported by the masses.
These Haitian asylum seekers and refugees have faced hardship after hardship — including the turmoil caused by the assassination of Haiti’s president, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck in August, and the nation’s ongoing issues of food insecurity and social unrest.
We cannot turn our backs to those who left everything behind to seek safety and opportunity.
Refugees look to America for a new home, one that can offer safety and security for their loved ones.
The United States has a moral obligation to provide asylum to those who seek it. It’s not just the right thing to do, it’s the precedent under international law.
To do anything less is neglecting our responsibility — with the lives of so many at stake, we must speak out to put a stop to these cruelties.
