We did it!
This afternoon we passed the first ever bill to raise pay for app-based delivery workers! This victory is part of a package of bills that will help Los Deliveristas Unidos win dignity and rights on the job.
The bold organizing of Los Deliveristas Unidos and the hardships of this year galvanized action to demand better pay, safety, and working conditions for workers who have been excluded from traditional labor protections.
Honor their work with me by making a donation to the Workers Justice Project, which organizes low-wage, immigrant New Yorkers for workplace justice and has been supporting Los Deliveristas Unidos’ fight.
This bill will require a minimum per trip payment for delivery workers, to ensure that they can earn stable income to support their families. It builds on my legislation to secure minimum pay for Uber and Lyft drivers, and on a history of organizing alongside low-wage workers, from carwasheros to fast food workers, to win power and dignity in the workplace.
I’m proud to work with Los Deliveristas Unidos, the Workers Justice Project, and my colleagues on this legislation that will get us closer to making these jobs safe and sustainable. The fight to transform exploitative, low-paying, no-benefit gig economy jobs into work that can support individuals and families is not near over, but today’s legislative package is a big step forward.
