John,

Here we go again with Republicans loosely referring to lynching as if it were not the most reprehensible act of savagery scarring the face of American history.

First, a US Senator makes a joke about it, and now President Trump has compared his impeachment to it.

Let's be clear: Almost 600 people were killed by lynching in Mississippi alone -- the highest number of any state.

President Trump is coming to Mississippi next week. Making such a repugnant and insensitive statement within days of coming here is despicable.

President Trump does not care, and neither does his ally -- my GOP opponent.

My far-right Republican opponent is proud to be the former chairwoman of Mississippi Women for Trump. She is proud to have been endorsed by his former campaign manager. She is proud to stand up for Trump's racist rants and sexual assault. She does not care.

But I do care.

I care about the language our elected officials use, because it matters.

I care about moving our state -- and our country -- forward by healing the wounds of our all too recent past when human beings were enslaved and then openly and systematically oppressed because of the color of their skin.

I care about the civil rights, human rights, and dignity of all people here in Mississippi.

I care about making sure that the next Attorney General of our state is a champion for our hard-won progress.

We've got 13 days to go. Even though "here they go again," I know we can have a different outcome. I know that we can win this by working together.

Jennifer Riley Collins
