I’m running for Polk County Attorney (a.k.a “district attorney”) in Polk County, Iowa. Des Moines is the county seat and there are about half a million Americans who live here. We’ve had the same county attorney for 30 years and we need change. Cash bail policy is one of the things we must change.

According to the Center for American Progress, “three out of 5 people in U.S. jails today have not been convicted of a crime.”

The reality of our country’s cash bail system is this: We keep people in jail, not based on whether they are a safety threat to our communities, not based on guilt or innocence, but on whether they can pay bail.

If you have the money, you’ll be out quickly, but if you don’t, you’ll sit there waiting for disposition of your case.

Here’s the thing: your local county attorney or district attorney has the power to change this by not requesting cash bail for folks who are not a threat to public safety. When I’m elected, that will be the default policy of my office.

Please consider chipping in $5, $10 or whatever you can - today - so we can reform the justice system for almost half a million Americans -- and help make cash bail reform in Iowa a reality!
