Dear John,

On Sunday night, Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough declared that Senate rules prevent Democrats from including their enormous, 8-million person illegal alien amnesty in their budget reconciliation bill.

This of course is a huge relief to us. However, we have to keep fighting as hard as we can, because the Democrats have refused to give up!

See, MacDonough argued that the amnesty is a "tremendous and enduring policy change that dwarfs its budgetary impact." As you recall, the whole point of having a budget reconciliation bill is to get around a likely Republican filibuster in the Senate. The leaders wanted to insert what would be the biggest illegal alien amnesty in history into a budget bill that could pass with only Democratic votes. The parliamentarian's opinion seemed to slam the door on any amnesty being allowed in the bill. Yet that hasn't fazed Democratic leaders.

Senate Democratic leaders Dick Durbin and Alex Padilla issued a statement saying lawmakers "have prepared alternative [amnesty] proposals for the parliamentarian's consideration in the coming days."

Durbin said he and his fellow Democrats "have a Plan B, C, and D" ready to get amnesty into the bill. They hope to pester Ms. MacDonough until she bends.

"I certainly intend to keep working until we get to a yes, and we're not going to take no for an answer," Sen. Bob Menendez admitted.

John, we had hoped that the Parliamentarian MacDonough would reject this ploy to pass an amnesty in the budget bill, and she has.

But we can't risk that other amnesty plans they will try, their "B, C, and D" amnesty ideas, may somehow get approved. We have to fight the amnesty until any hope the Democrats have of passing it is dead and buried.

Our matching grant campaign is still continuing! We need your help to finish it out.

... We need to raise $200,000.... or more!

If you donate today, your gift will be doubled. If you give $3, we will spend $6 more fighting this amnesty.

Even if you spend $1,000, we will spend $2,000 more to help people tell Congress, "NO AMNESTY!"

You have less than 7 days to donate and have your gifts MATCHED! So please hurry!

There are several tactics the Democrats are openly talking about, which they might use to pass the amnesty. Whatever tactic they choose, we have to take their threat seriously.

They could simplify or limit the amnesty. For instance, according to Roll Call, Sen. Menendez wants to "move up the date on the immigration registry, an existing law currently set at 1972, which would allow immigrants who have resided in the U.S. since that date and who have demonstrated 'good moral character' to become permanent residents."

Or, they could overrule or simply ignore the parliamentarian. Even Dems acknowledge this would be hard. But if all 50 Democratic Senators (plus the Vice-President) hang together, they could leave the amnesty in the bill and overturn any parliamentarian ruling that they should strip it out.

Either scenario comes with huge potential costs for the Democrats. We must make the political cost unbearable. We need your help to do that.

Democrats in Congress hope that by next election, you and the rest of their constituents will have moved on. American voters have to show them that we will not move on!

That's why we've been spending thousands of dollars a day to flood Congress with calls from members' own constituents... especially in states with Senators who might break from voting with their party.

I'm so grateful for the overwhelming response we've received to our $200,000 matching grant campaign. Thousands of NumbersUSA members have participated. But we are spending the money as quickly as it is coming in! Our Capitol Hill team is pleading that the more calls and letters we can send to Congress, the more likely we are to block this amnesty.

I pointed out last week that the proposed amnesty would have eventually cost our Social Security and Medicare funds more than ONE TRILLION DOLLARS. Yet the parliamentarian clarified that the cost was not the key issue.

MacDonough noted that the purpose for a policy change must be budgetary. Clearly, the purpose of the amnesty would be to change immigration policy, not alter the budget. As the parliamentarian explained in her decision,

"The reasons that people risk their lives to come to this country ... cannot be measured in federal dollars. The same is true of the value of having the security of [legal] status in this country."

-- Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough,
September 19

This isn't over. We're pleased that MacDonough made it clear that "Plan A" for getting amnesty for eight million is closed. But Democratic leaders in Congress have made several forceful statements that they intend to pass an amnesty somehow, and soon. . . We can't let them win. Not when we've fought so hard for so long. Not when victory -- for now -- is so close.

That's why we're so determined to complete the $200,000 Match Campaign. We only need a few thousand more dollars to get there. Please don't miss your chance to block amnesty and have your donation doubled!

Right now, generous large donors stand ready to match whatever size gift you make dollar-for-dollar. But this offer ends on midnight September 30.

Please give today.
