Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

The beautiful fall weather brings with it great opportunities for us to open up our rooftop terrace for several live screenings throughout the next month. Check out what we'll be offering, and see if you can come out to join us in the fresh air for a few films.

Starting this Friday, we'll be premiering IN Series Theatre Company's new film Pieces of a Last Act, featuring music from Richard Wagner. Then, we'll revisit some of the great films we streamed this past summer with Pierre Sanoussi-Bliss's heartfelt tragicomedy Return to GO! on September 29, and Mo Asumang's daring documentary Roots Germania on October 7. Then, we're excited to present our contributions to the Films Across Borders annual city-wide film series: The Trouble with Being Born on October 14, and In the Name of Scheherazade or The Last Beer Garden in Tehran on October 21.

Plain Sight DC and the EU National Institutes of Culture in Washington, DC (EUNIC) are proud to present A Window to Europe: Through Literature and Art, a series of short exhibitions featuring eleven visual artists from the Washington, DC region who will create work in response to eleven books by European writers. Beginning the series will be the work of Baltimore-based creative Hoesy Corona, whose artwork responds to German illustrator and writer Lukas Jüliger's graphic novel Unfollow.

In one of our classrooms, we will also show at select dates and times the video installation Past, Present, Tense. from Christa Joo Hyun D'Angelo, a Berlin-based artist originally from the USA. The 32-minute installation will play on loop for visitors on days where we have film screenings on the terrace; check out the full schedule below for more information.

Films on the Terrace: Fall 2021

Throughout September and October 2021, the Goethe-Institut Washington will screen films on the rooftop terrace at its R St. & 14th St space in NW Washington.

Seating is limited due to COVID-19 protocols; the terrace has a capacity of 55. Therefore, we kindly ask that registrants consider the commitment of attending a live and in-person film screening in downtown, Washington, DC, before registration. We would like to ensure that as many registrants as possible who will be able to join us on-site can RSVP. As seating is limited, we will release seating to walk-up guests as of 15 minutes before the beginning of each screening.

We look forward to seeing many of you again!

Shaping the Past: Past, Present, Tense. (2015) Christa Joo Hyun D'Angelo

Predominantly East-German-socialized interviewees look back on German reunification and the hostile time that immediately followed, where racist attacks of arson in Rostock and riots were commonplace.

The engaging discussion surrounds the question of German identity and who is served by fixing this position in whiteness. Characteristic of Christa D'Angelo’s work, the conversations remain fluid, intimate, and personal, while speaking volumes to the responsibilities of colonial histories and detriments of cultural amnesia.

Past, Present, Tense.
