Hi John,

In the fifty years since Greenpeace was founded, we’ve taken on some of the most destructive industries on our planet -- and won.

But today the greatest challenge we face -- the climate and nature crisis -- is ahead of us.

2020 was the hottest year in Europe ever. [1] Wildfires swept through countries again. And catastrophic floods devastated people's lives. [2]

Headlines like these can feel like our planet needs an impossible level of change. But, John, there’s one thing to know about impossible – it’s a word we’ve heard before.

“Impossible” is what we were told when we set out to stop the whaling industry. “Impossible” was the response when we demanded an end to nuclear weapons tests. “Impossible” was the word we heard when we called for protections for Antarctica.

All these “impossibles” became possible. And all are proof that we can build a better future. But to fix the climate crisis, it's going to take huge numbers of us working together, and working harder than ever. That's why I’m emailing to ask, can you give monthly to help our movement grow?

It’s because of people like you that the climate and nature crisis is even being talked about. Because together, we’ve pushed the issue up the political agenda. And thanks to huge advances in science and engineering, the solutions – from affordable green energy, to restoring forests and oceans – are better understood than ever.

But if we’re truly going to curb the crisis we’re in, we’ll need to bring an end to the most powerful, most destructive industry in human history – the fossil fuel industry.

Today, we’re still burning huge amounts of oil, gas and coal each year. And Boris Johnson’s government is even considering digging up more coal, and drilling new oil reserves.

Nothing short of transformation of society is needed to avert catastrophe, and if we’re going to make that happen, humanity must urgently change path. [3]

John, we've got a huge job ahead of us. So can you contribute monthly and help dramatically ramp up our work on the climate and nature crisis, to help meet the scale of the challenge we face?

Fifty years ago, Greenpeace was founded on an idea: if committed, like-minded people work together, we can create a better world.

Today, that idea still holds true. I see it in action when millions of us sign petitions together, when we collectively speak out against harm being done to our planet, and when people give what they can to fund Greenpeace’s work. So if you’re able to, please chip in monthly today: [link removed]

With all my thanks,

Karen Rothwell
