Friend,
Right now, thousands of families are being forcibly removed from their homes in a massive eviction emergency.
With the Delta variant rapidly spreading, particularly among unhoused people, this is a matter of life or death: Congress must act to offer immediate protection to renters.
Will you add your name to co-sign Congresswoman Cori Bush's urgent new bill to keep millions of people safely in their homes during this public health crisis?
Late last month, the right-wing Supreme Court blocked our hard-fought moratorium on evictions.
The majority decision questioned the CDC’s legal authority to limit evictions during a public health crisis, and called for explicit congressional authorization.
So Rep. Cori Bush introduced the Keeping Renters Safe Act, which would give the Department of Health and Human Services (which oversees the CDC) the permanent authority to implement eviction moratoriums during public health crises.
Listening to people in my district, I hear from so many who can’t keep up with their bills and are afraid they’ll be out on the streets. I represent the third poorest congressional district in the country, including one of the most racially segregated cities—Detroit.
Here, activists have fought for housing justice for decades, up against discriminatory housing policies that have widened the racial wealth gap between Black and white Americans.
Once a national leader in Black homeownership, now Detroit has more renters than owners. And our Black residents who rent are more likely to have eviction cases filed against them than white residents.
What’s more, eviction filings stay on people’s records, hindering their future ability to rent or buy homes—which furthers cycles of poverty and segregation.
We’ve got to fight evictions and ensure housing as a basic right in our country. Please join me in supporting Rep. Cori Bush’s bill to keep people in their homes during the pandemic.
Will you add your name to co-sign the Keeping Renters Safe Act? It's urgent we take action now as COVID-19 surges in communities across our country, threatening the lives of unhoused people in particular.
Thank you,
Rashida
