Dear Friend,
Four years ago today, I was coping with the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in my hometown of San Juan, Puerto Rico. My son and my husband were safe, but I hadn’t been able to contact my parents for three weeks and the electricity grid was still down.
Electricity wouldn’t return to all of Puerto Rico until nearly a year later.
Most of the casualties from Hurricane Maria were due to the loss of power, not the storm itself. Life-saving medical equipment, like oxygen devices, failed and medicines that required refrigeration became useless.
Today, there is $10 billion in federal funding allocated to repair Puerto Rico’s archaic electrical grid. We’re pushing for the funding to go towards a reliable distributed rooftop solar network to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. But Puerto Rico’s government wants to build fracked gas infrastructure instead.
Puerto Rico’s government, captive by fossil fuel interests, is valuing profits above human lives. I’m leading this legal battle, and Friend, my team at Earthjustice needs your support.

DOUBLE MATCH MY MONTHLY GIFT

This Climate Week, I hope you’ll consider making a monthly commitment to Earthjustice. Fights like this can last for years — your monthly funding ensures we can follow through to the very end.
And if you commit today, your monthly gift will be matched $2:$1 for the next 12 months. That means your $25/mo. gift will become $900 in funding over the next year, which we'll leverage to protect our communities and our planet.
As we continue to face climate change-fueled natural disasters, the need for renewable energy is only becoming more urgent. Friend, will you join the fight for a reliable clean electricity grid in Puerto Rico with a monthly gift to Earthjustice?

.
With gratitude,
Laura Arroyo
