Friend: When conflict erupted in Afghanistan this summer, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams were on the ground supporting the Boost provincial hospital in Lashkar Gah.
As staff worked quickly to provide care to people, including many wounded in the fighting, the sounds of shelling, mortar and rocket attacks, and airstrikes roared through the halls. At one point, a rocket exploded within the hospital compound. Thankfully, there were no casualties.
But the need for our care didn’t end when the fighting did—in fact, patient numbers spiked as more people were able to leave their homes to seek medical attention. In the days immediately following the rapid transfer of power to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (also known as the Taliban), the emergency room at Boost hospital received more than 700 patients a day, and sometimes more than 800.
With local clinics unable to meet the needs of the people, MSF remains one of the only sources of free health care for over 1.3 million patients in Lashkar Gah.
Friend, MSF teams are trained to be on the ground in emergencies at a moment’s notice. We rely on the support of this generous community to keep going, which is why we are reaching out to ask you to renew your support today. From now until September 30, any gift you make to MSF will be matched—up to $135,000—thanks to a generous grant from our longtime supporter, FJC—A Foundation of Philanthropic Funds. Will you make an urgent, MATCHED gift to MSF today?
With your support, MSF teams responding to emergencies around the world are ready to provide care to the most vulnerable people, wherever they are.
Thank you for standing with us.
All gifts given, up to $135,000, will be doubled through 11:59 PM EST on 9/30. Every dollar you give will be matched with $1. Gifts received after the match has been met will not be matched, but will be used where needed most.
