Team — when it comes to shady online fundraising gimmicks, this one’s a doozy.
When President Trump was running for re-election in 2020 (a race he very much lost, in case anyone needs clarification on that point), his campaign added something VERY curious to their donation requests. Check it out:

Do you see what we see? That’s an automatically checked box for a WEEKLY recurring donation, as well as a pre-checked box that automatically kicks in “an additional $100.” Both are easy to miss and can trick people into contributing more than they’re able.
That isn’t just bad politics (former President Trump had to reimburse millions of dollars worth of donations from the people his campaign bilked). It’s also wrong — full stop.
Here’s our policy: We will never, EVER, pre-check a recurring contribution box unless we are very clear about what we’re asking. Like this:
Join our Majority Defenders Program — a monthly recurring donor program — for $22 a month today. Monthly donors receive early access to our endorsement announcements, special memos with insight into our 2022 strategy, and more.
Look, monthly donations are wildly important for operations like ours. They help us project future revenue and give us some certainty about our finances as we go into 2022.
But it’s not worth tricking you into a donation. If helping us in our work to protect the Democratic House majority is important to you, we’d love for you to join our monthly donor program.
Think former President Trump’s campaign can’t top that shady practice? Wait for our next issue…
