Hey John,
It’s me, Travis, visiting your inbox to share an update from our Judicial Advocacy Team. This one goes all the way up to the Supreme Court, so if you’ve been looking for the best way to support this work, the time is now.
SUPPORT OUR JUDICIAL ADVOCACY WORK [[link removed]]
Here’s the TLDR: In the coming months, the Supreme Court will hear the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association’s case on whether anyone, anywhere, should be allowed to carry guns in public without restrictions. šŸ˜µā€šŸ’« On top of that, they’ll decide what kinds of state gun regulations are constitutional. This is the first time in over a decade that SCOTUS is poised to make a substantive decision on the Second Amendment, and the outcome of this case is likely to have a sweeping and possibly devastating impact on gun safety legislation around the country.
Yes, you’re hearing me correctly. Nearly every gun safety law is at risk. The stakes have never been higher and March For Our Lives’ Judicial Advocacy Team is hard at work to make sure our legal argument is heard: We, as young people, have a constitutional right not to be shot.
It’s absurd that we even need to say it, but when there are people in this country who love their guns more than our lives, we’re left with no other choice. So in between submitting our fall midterm papers, we filed an amicus brief [[link removed]] (a document created by a group not directly involved in a case but who have important insight into the issue) sharing the stories of young people whose lives have been changed or stolen by gun violence. By amplifying the voices of young people -- like Samantha Mayor, a Marjory Stoneman Douglas student, and Brandon Wolf, a survivor from the Pulse shooting -- we are centering the case in the enduring trauma and suffering thrust onto gun violence survivors and our generation. We do this work so that no 16-year old ever again has to say ā€œI came to terms with dying.ā€ [[link removed]]
It’s essential that we not only bring young people’s voices into every part of the litigation process, but also that we mass-mobilize young people to get the court’s attention and ensure the voices of young survivors are taken seriously in this case. And that’s where we need your help. This effort will require resources, broad support, and a national reach. So I have to ask, can you support our national organizing effort to build momentum around this critical case?

The failure to regulate firearms in public presents an existential threat to our freedom to learn, speak, work, and simply exist without the fear of being shot. We have no choice but to win.
In pursuit of justice,
