Dear Supporter,
In an op-ed published in African Arguments, John Prendergast, Co-Founder of The Sentry, and Brian Adeba, Deputy Director of Policy at the Enough Project, argue that the current political context in Sudan offers new hope that the deadlocked status of Abyei can be addressed.
Abyei, a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, has remained a contentious issue between the two countries since 2011. “In order to move forward, the issue of Abyei’s future requires internationally supported mediation,” note Prendergast and Adeba, who explain how a new approach based on sharing rather than winner-takes-all is needed. They add that “the new political dispensation in Sudan offers both sides a fresh opportunity to discuss Abyei as part of larger efforts to end all conflicts between the two neighbors and prevent future escalations along the border. As well as resolving much uncertainty, this would allow for greater economic cooperation and its associated benefits for both sides.”
