John,As sea ice melts due to climate change, polar bears have fewer encounters with other polar bears. And that, in turn, is leading to increased inbreeding among polar bears.
According to a recent scientific study published in the Royal Society Journals , researchers are increasingly worried that, as more bears inbreed, it will lead to infertility and an inability to breed. That would be a nail in the coffin for the threatened polar bears.

The research found a ten percent decrease in the genetic diversity of polar bears over 20 years in the Norwegian archipelago Svalbard. The reduction in polar bear diversity corresponded with the measurable loss of sea ice.
Climate change has a devastating impact on polar bears, including increasing starvation from their dwindling hunting grounds. A 2020 study estimates all polar bears could be extinct by 2100 if the Arctic ice continues melting at its current rate.
And this new study published in the Royal Society Journals is another sign polar bears are in severe distress. Doing nothing to prevent this unfolding catastrophe is not an option.
The scientific evidence is overwhelming: Climate change is increasingly a clear and present danger to endangered species like polar bears across the globe.
