John,

This week, my team and I introduced a robust plan to build on our road to economic recovery, address historic disinvestment, and boost our vaccination rate. The plan reflects our whole-of-government approach and commitment to an equitable recovery for all Chicagoans.

Equity is at the center of everything we do, and our 2022 budget proposal is no different. This blueprint for recovery leverages the American Rescue Plan funding holistically to invest in Chicago families and neighborhoods, with the goal of reducing homicides and gun-related crimes and increasing community safety while providing young people with pathways to jobs, education and new programs.

The budget also seeks to expand investment for businesses along key corridors—creating jobs, new infrastructure, and increasing travel to our city.

Plus, we’re creating a new pilot program to provide direct cash assistance of $500 per month for up to 5,000 working families for 12 months. Programs like this have proven to make a real impact for families in need, and ours will be the largest initiative of its kind anywhere in the country.

We’re going to do this with no new taxes, no layoffs and no reduction in city services.

I’m very excited about this plan. We’re making once-in-a-generation investments in our communities, continuing Chicago on a path to fiscal stability and enhancing City services—all without increasing the burden on taxpayers.

Regards,
