THE FORUM
SEPTEMBER 2021 EDITION
Â
Â
When President Biden committed to withdrawing troops from Afghanistan
this past Spring, we knew a crisis facing Afghans hoping to flee was
about to unfold. We simply couldn't sit on the sidelines and took
immediate action.
Since then, we've held meetings with dozens of congressional offices
from across the political spectrum, launched a digital call to action
campaign to gather support for our Afghan allies and refugees, generated
dozens of media hits, helped raise money for our partner organizations
working on resettlement efforts, and more. But our work is far from
over. What comes next?
Read on for more.

The path to protectionÂ
The Biden administration has announced three different immigration
pathways for the evacuation and resettlement of vulnerable Afghans:
Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) status, the Priority 2 (P2) Refugee
Program, and Humanitarian Parole. Read this **explainer**
or watch this **video** from
our friends at Women of Welcome to learn the eligibility requirements,
application processes, and vetting procedures for each of the three
paths to protection. For more on Humanitarian Parole, make sure to read
this great **summary**
from our policy team.
**ICYMI:** In the last 20 years, more than **97,000 Afghan refugees**
have been resettled in the U.S. Below, look at the top 10 states for
Afghan resettlement. And for a list of where recent evacuees are
expected to go in the coming weeks, read this ****Axios** piece**

Combating Nativism Â
It's more than just resettlement. We need to be ready for
counter-narratives from those ready to weaponize fearmongering and
nativism towards refugees.
More than
**7 out of 10 Americans** -- including strong majorities of Republicans,
white and rural voters -- support resettling Afghans who worked with the
U.S. government or military. And yet, already we see nativist forces
weaponizing this humanitarian crisis for political gain -- and we must
counter this unwelcoming approach.
As our Board Member and **Council on National Security and Immigration**
leader Elizabeth Neumann points out in this
**ABC News** **op-ed**
,
our focus should be on welcoming and extending a helping hand to Afghan
refugees, not fearmongering.
At the Forum, we continue to highlight the need to welcome Afghan
refugees and allies. As our CEO, Ali Noorani explains in a recent
**Boston Globe** **editorial**
and in this
**McClatchy** **piece**
,
we can strengthen our democracy by working across the political aisle to
support those building new lives in the U.S.

critical services they need to thrive in their new homes. First, **urge
Congress** to provide help for our Afghan
allies and friends. Then, **retweet**
this is if
you're #ReadytoWelcome, too!
****Make a gift****
Afghan allies and their families risked everything to serve alongside
our troops and diplomats, and now it's our time to help them. Help us
