Our work is paying off—and abortion access is expanding

Dear John,
You may have heard on Sept. 7 that Mexico’s Supreme Court issued a historic ruling that laws criminalizing abortion are unconstitutional. Here in Mexico, we are very much still celebrating!
Specifically, the court declared Coahuila State’s penal code unconstitutional for penalizing people who choose to end a pregnancy. But the ruling signals that no person who has an abortion anywhere in Mexico should face prosecution—because it violates their constitutional rights to autonomy and reproductive freedom.
This is a major step forward for our country to fully respect, protect and promote the human rights of women and all people who can get pregnant!
It’s also very encouraging to see that years of devoted activism are paying off. Alongside our many partners, Ipas Central America and Mexico has contributed to the movement for abortion rights in many ways, such as by educating court officials and government decisionmakers about reproductive rights. And by supporting campaigns for legal abortion in various states—including in Hidalgo and Veracruz, where abortion became legal earlier this year.
I invite you to learn more about this historic court ruling ([link removed]) , including two interesting interviews I did with CNN and NPR in the days after the news broke.
And if you’d like to support our ongoing work, please consider donating to our project on GlobalGiving: ([link removed]) Reproductive freedom in Central America and Mexico ([link removed]) . There will be plenty more work ahead as we fight to ensure states change their laws to uphold reproductive rights—and then to ensure health facilities have the training and support to offer high-quality abortion care.
In solidarity,
María Antonieta Alcalde
Director, Ipas Mexico and Central America
PS: I’m painfully aware that across the border in Texas, people have just lost their right to reproductive freedom. Yet I remain hopeful—as we all do at Ipas—knowing that the global march toward reproductive justice is often an exercise in two steps forward and one step back. The good news is that the global trend is toward expanding abortion rights and reproductive freedom.
