KC Opera House Orchestra Oks 3-year deal
The musicians of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra - members of the DC Musicians Union, AFM 161-710 - have ratified three-year contracts with the Kennedy Center and the Washington National Opera. While the musicians have accepted a 9% cut in the first year of the contract, restorations by the third year will bring them very close to their pre-pandemic salary. "This sacrifice signifies a serious commitment on the part of these musicians and their families to assist their employer institutions during a period of unprecedented hardship," the musicians said in an announcement Monday. They noted that "Opera by its very nature was one of the hardest hit art forms during the pandemic and may be the slowest to recover," adding that the ballet program faces similar challenges.

Labor Photo: Richmond Nabisco strikers
Nabisco workers in Richmond, VA returned to their picketing site one last time to clean up and snap this photo on Monday, afterhttps://bctgm.org/2021/09/18/nabisco-strike-ends-bctgm-members-overwhelmingly-accept-new-contract/ settling their strike late last week. "Nabisco workers in Richmond thank you for all your hard work and solidarity during the strike. You guys are amazing," said BCTGM Local 358 Fin. Secy/Bus. Agt. Darlene Carpenter.

In Memoriam: UFCW's Arnold Mayer
Arnold Mayer died on August 27 after a brief illness. He worked for many years in Washington as a labor lobbyist for several labor unions, served as a vice president of the UFCW, and helped shape legislation to improve the lives of working people. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), the Capital Area Food Bank, or the Jewish Labor Committee. A memorial tribute will be held on Sunday, October 17, from 4 to 7 p.m., in Washington; email mailto:[email protected] [email protected] if you'd like to attend. Read more [link removed] here.

Today's Labor Quote: Bela Fleck

"Sometimes you can fix something that went wrong with what you do next and make it better than it would have been if it hadn't gone wrong."

American banjo player Bela Fleck will be playing at Strathmore tonight, where members of the ticket sellers will be demonstrating for a contract and to save their jobs (see Calendar, above).
