Liz WillenDear reader,

Along with the resurgence of Covid-19 this summer, parts of the United States saw stark and terrifying evidence of climate change – yet another reminder of how children are likely to face more disruptions to their education for years to come.

The Hechinger Report’s Caroline Preston took a closer look at the impact of what sounds like a series of plagues: megafires, floods, heat and hurricanes, for example. And what she reported should be a wake-up call: Students are “coming of age in a world battered by disasters on a scale unimaginable even a few years go.”

One takeaway is the need for accurate teaching about the science behind these events, along with ways to mitigate – and cope with – the harm. Very few parts of the U.S. will be spared. We hope this school year will be a lot less disruptive than last year, at least – and as always, we love to hear from our readers.

Main Idea

Climate change is sabotaging education for America’s students – and it’s only going to get worse

Children worry their communities are becoming unlivable as deadly wildfires, heat waves, hurricanes and floods delay learning, devastate school buildings and exact a toll on mental health.
