We must end the abuse of Title 42

Dear ,
I was incensed when I saw the images of U.S. Border Patrol agents on horseback who used their reins as whips against Haitian migrants and asylum seekers. The agents knocked some men over, while they were getting food and water for their families.
This gross disregard for human dignity is happening because of the abuse of Title 42, a policy that Trump warped, arguing that it would protect the U.S. from COVID. The Biden administration has maintained that lie. The abuse of Title 42 does nothing to protect Americans from COVID. Instead, it is being used only to expel migrants and asylum seekers—including those who are LGBTQ—as quickly as possible. Refugees receive no due process, no day in court, nothing.
Last week, a federal judge in Washington, D.C. found the abuse of the policy to be illegal. In fact, he ruled that Title 42 could put asylum seekers in danger of being sent back to countries where they will face persecution. But in a shocking move, the Biden administration appealed the decision and is actively defending the Trump atrocity. That’s why we need to demand the government drop its appeal to the ruling and protect asylum seekers immediately.

For LGBTQ people in particular, expulsion means returning to a society that rejects them. They are frequent targets of violence and sexual assault, including by the police. In 2019 the leader of Haiti’s LGBTQ rights movement was found dead at his home, and his organization was the target of multiple attacks. The country is fundamentally unsafe for the queer and transgender community.
It is tragic that instead of welcoming Haitian asylum seekers, the Biden administration is sending them back to life-threatening conditions. We demand that the government halt the deportation flights immediately and end the abuse of Title 42. Join us in imploring the administration to drop its appeal to the federal judge’s decision stopping the Trump policy. Join us in by signing on to our petition today.
