CLARKE CALLS FOR A HUMANITARIAN MORATORIUM AND DUE PROCESS FOR HAITIAN MIGRANTS AND CONDEMNS CBP AGENTS BEHAVIOR AT THE SOUTHERN BORDER.
Washington, DC — Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) calls for due process for Haitian Migrants at the southern border, a humanitarian moratorium on the Haitian repatriation flights due to the emergent and compounding situations in Haiti. She also condemns the behavior of CBP agents and supports Secretary Mayorkas’ comprehensive investigation into the egregious series of events in Del Rio, Texas.
“More than 14,000 Haitians will be expelled from the United States in the coming weeks, and it is unconscionable DHS would seek to return Haitian migrants to a country in turmoil without adequate due process. My colleagues and I have repeatedly spoken out and penned numerous letters requesting the ceasing of targeted deportations of Haitian migrants. However, this dangerous and wholly unnecessary practice has not only continued, it has escalated. We’ve witnessed border patrol agents inhumanely wield tools of intimidation to herd Haitian refugees as though they were cattle. This behavior is reprehensible, and it must be addressed. I have dedicated my career to building an immigration system that lets people live without fear and gives immigrants – like my parents – who sought a better life and to contribute to our nation a fair opportunity to thrive,” said Clarke.
