Hey Team – Laura, Digital Director at the DGA here. I wanted to talk to you about what’s happening with reproductive rights in Texas and across the country.

This month, Gov. Abbott’s appalling law – the most extreme abortion ban in the country – went into effect. It prohibits abortions as early as six weeks – before many people know they are pregnant. It also allows private citizens to sue anyone who helps people access abortion and collect a $10,000 bounty for doing so.

That not all: Republican officials in half a dozen states are already replicating this heinous bill in their states. SCOTUS refused to take action to stop this assault on choice, effectively overturning Roe v. Wade and suggesting they could fully repeal it next. And just yesterday the Supreme Court agreed to hear a DIRECT challenge to Roe v. Wade on December 1st!

Team, this is scary. Texas has almost completely banned abortions, and without the Supreme Court protecting reproductive rights, Democratic governors are our last line of defense. Fourteen states and Washington, D.C. have laws on the books to protect abortion if Roe v. Wade is repealed – but it’s at risk in the other 36. If we don’t take action soon, access to safe and legal abortions is on the line.

But Democrats are fighting back: the House is voting on the Women's Health Protection Act this week! This bill would codify Roe v. Wade as the law of the land, striking down current state restrictions on abortion and keeping states from imposing new ones. Without SCOTUS, this legislation is the ONLY way we can protect reproductive rights nationwide.

Team, it’s personal to me: 8 in 10 Americans believe abortion should stay legal – and everyone loves someone who’s had an abortion (whether they know it or not). At this make or break moment to save Roe v. Wade, I’m writing to you today to ask you for your help.

Before the House votes, will you sign our petition to tell Congress to pass the Women's Health Protection Act? We need just 15 more signatures from xxxxxx, and I’m counting on you to help.
