Hey Jack,
The 2020 election was full of passion. With record turnout -- in the midst of a pandemic, no less. It was obvious just how important it was for New Mexicans to have their voices heard.
The chaos that ensued in the weeks following the November general election, though, was horrifying. Several New Mexican officials were met with aggression and hostility, fueled by false election fraud claims promoted by our country’s former president, Donald Trump. On multiple occasions, death threats, racist remarks, and doxxing attempts were committed by individuals emboldened by Trump's conspiracy-fueled claims, leaving government public servants fearing for their safety.
This is completely unacceptable.
As a part of the national council working closely with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to secure our elections, I am committed to ensuring that this sort of behavior never happens again. The right to vote is the cornerstone of democracy, and those who sacrifice their time to ensure our democratic process runs smoothly deserve to live without fear.
As we continue to work toward a solution that protects the heroes of our electoral process, I would be remiss if I did not emphasize the danger that these bogus narratives present to our democracy. Together, we must continue to move forward in the spirit of truth.
The chaotic aftermath of the 2020 election is something we cannot ignore. Election officials are critical to ensuring the success of our election infrastructure, and they deserve to feel safe no matter the outcome.
