Dear John,

Just like humans, elephants are incredibly social animals, and they suffer greatly in captive environments that prevent them from moving about freely and engaging in their natural behaviors. In 2020, when we were restricted in where we could go, who we could see, and what we could do, we got a small glimpse of what living a life deprived of autonomy is like.

As autonomous, cognitively and emotionally complex beings, our clients Happy [[link removed]] and Minnie [[link removed]] and all captive elephants are entitled to have their fundamental right to liberty recognized and protected. In and beyond the courtroom, we are fighting for our clients’ ability to exercise their autonomy, including the freedom to choose where to go, what to do, and with whom to be.

That is why the NhRP is getting #ActiveForAnimalRights [[link removed]] . Active to us means the autonomy to move about freely—taking part in any health or wellness activity you usually like to do, anywhere you’d like to do it, at your own pace. Join hundreds of other supporters from around the world to #ExerciseYourAutonomy [[link removed]] for our clients and for all captive elephants who can’t exercise theirs.

All funds raised through this event go directly towards securing fundamental rights for our elephant clients and all elephants. Help us reach our collective goal to raise more than $100,000 and complete a total of 20,000 miles .

With gratitude,
Mickey Suzuki
Development Director, the NhRP
