From the moment they hatch until they are slaughtered at just six weeks of age, chickens born into the horrific world of the chicken industry only know pain and suffering. Some chicks don’t even make it past a few hours of age as they fall victim to faulty equipment, rough handling, neglect and cruelty.
Earlier this year, a brave Animal Outlook investigator recorded footage inside a North Carolina chicken hatchery owned by Case Farms. This facility processes more than 200,000 chicks daily, and our undercover investigator documented the torment these chicks experienced. This suffering is the devastating result of these animals being viewed and treated only as food products.
As caught on our investigator’s camera, many chicks are killed each day during processing, while some are born deformed or hatch improperly or early. The chicks who don’t make it to the processing line due to deformities or injury are left to languish in trays. Ignored, they are left to suffer, often for an hour or more, before finally being put out of their misery. Our investigation showed some of these chicks being gassed before maceration and others dumped into a macerator fully conscious and ground alive.

The chicks deemed potentially profitable are not treated any better. Our investigator's camera documented newly-hatched chicks being killed, mangled or trapped in equipment or machinery that was improperly operated or set up. The chicks that are still alive, but tragically maimed, end up with those born with deformities or injuries, left to suffer until finally being killed. The footage also showed employees roughly handling these chicks by throwing them, dragging plastic trays across them and crushing their throats, and running them over with machinery.
The chicks who survive the hatchery are then sent to grow-out facilities where they are crammed together in dark, dirty sheds for a few more torturous weeks before eventually being killed for food. Some don’t even survive the journey -- according to one of the workers, chicks sometimes fall through the floorboards of the truck during transport and get run over by the vehicles behind.

The suffering these birds endure is almost too much to bear thinking about. Sadly, these baby birds exist for the sole purpose of being turned into meat products, destined to endure lives of torment and misery before ultimately being killed.
We have provided our investigation findings to the local prosecutor and law enforcement and requested criminal prosecution of the Case Farms corporation.
In this industry, chicks suffer from the moment they hatch until the moment they die. But you can help these animals every time you choose a vegan meal. Click here ([link removed]) to learn more and sign up to receive coupons for discounts on vegan chicken alternatives.
